Global cooling

Spring continues to disappoint. This is the coldest spring in my recent memory. Today featured yet again a high temperature of about 5 degrees below average for the date. It passed for a nice day for this spring as the sun was out for a little while. Soon enough the overcast moved back in and as evening falls there is a definite feeling of snow in the air.

But it was acceptable riding conditions so I rode. Yesterday's effort produced a little overnight soreness, the most noticeable being a bit of a twinge in my left Achilles. A little soreness is OK, good even, as it is a sign of progress. The other potential issue from the season start up is the user bicycle interface, the, ahem, posterior regions. I think the second and third rides featured a tiny bit of soreness in that area but all now seems to be fine.

On a very, very grey day, here is Emily Lake.On the route I rode today I came to this spot about 9.8 miles into the ride. Ice.

French speaker alert: The FC Nantes website has a section called FC Nantes TV. There are two features there today about the Carquefou victory of yesterday. It is mostly guys being interviewed in French so I didn't get a whole heck of a lot out of it. But if you speak French . . . The one titled "Carquefou réalise l'exploit" features a replay of the goal towards the end of the clip, so that clip is worth a watch, even for non-French speakers as long as they are football fans. The other, "USJA Carquefou-Marseille: Les réactions" is very top heavy with guys being interviewed in French. I still listen, getting words here and there, occasionally even grasping a phrase or two. It is good practice, I hope.

A few notes about "Carquefou réalise l'exploit:"

1) The player they interview near the middle used to play professionally for FC Nantes and he goes on about how much he misses the stadium and how great it is to be back. He remembers the smell of the grass.
2) The woman with curly hair who they interview outside the stadium is cheering for Carquefou because the goalkeeper works in her office.
3) After the game, the trainer says his career could end right now and he would consider himself an unbelievable success, to have gotten this far with this team.

They all can't even really grasp how amazing this is.

Very cool, Dad, thanks for the link. I'm going to watch the other one now.

And notes from "Les reactions:"

1) The captain from Carquefou, Sebastien Le Paih, notes that Marseille is 10 or 100 times the team they are. It's a dream they are living that they'll have for the rest of their lives. He's been dreaming of it since he was a boy. He's the one that used to play for FC Nantes.
2) Michel Auray, president of Carquefou - A perfect match, played with heart and intelligence against international caliber players.
3) Pape Diouf, president of OM (Olympique Marseille) - We were put to the side today. They played much better than ever expected, with hearts, guts, and character, and without fault. A team that wanted it more than us.

YAY Carquefou! Allez et bonne chance en quart de finale! (I'm sure I've spelled that wrong. Oh well).

Anyone else finding themselves to be newly minted Carquefou fans? I know I am.

Allez Carquefou!
It's great to have a French translator in the family.

Jimi will attest that TOPWLH has predicted (based on what he believes to be good science, as compared to what he believes to be the junk science that global warming proponents use...) that global cooling has begun. In fact, we are about 2 years into the shifts that will lead to a cooler trend, he says. So he wants credit for 'heard it here first.' Anyway, another nice long ride for early in the season. That explains why your average miles/ride is so different from mine. Interesting how everyone does this bike thing different. As you know, the butt eventually toughens up -- though every change of bike can bring up the issue again. Allez Gino. SS
