I scrolled through all of the comments to the video at YouTube. On page 14 of the comments (10 comments per page) I came across this posted by someone monikerred as RideFreeTX:
"It's a cultural thing. Many societies celebrate 'Carnival'. Most famous are the celebrations in Rio de Janeiro (Carnival) and New Orleans (Mardi Gras). It is a pre-Lenten last shot at partying. The Brazilians, New Orleanians, and many of the Caribe cultures do it up right - partying 'til they puke. In San Juan de la Vega, Mexico, they put explosives on sledge hammers, and bang them on metal plates. Go figure."
I have now officially donated way too much time to sledge hammer explosives.
