Lake Vadnais news

The one way (for cars) road across Lake Vadnais will be closed after this summer and become a route open only to bicycles and pedestrians. The Vadnais Heights city council has approved replacement of what is out there with a 12 foot wide pedestrian path.

That's bicyclist talk for sidewalk.

It's OK, during the times that I ride there aren't very many people out there anyway, walkers, drivers, bicyclists, or fishermen. This is going to have only a very slight negative effect on my riding.

I wouldn't want to be riding out there on a sunny Sunday afternoon in May or June though.

Schleck wins Tour de France

One and a half years later.

Also, Scarponi wins the Giro d'Italia.

Apparently the Court of Arbitration for Sport was swayed by a showing by the prosecution that the chance of a cow farmed in Europe being contaminated with clenbuterol at a level capable of being detected in Contador's urine was a mere 0.0042 percent.

In related news a very few people in the world were astonished to discover that Phil Liggett still supports Lance Armstrong.

Football news

Fox had a fabulous Premier League game on Super Sunday morning, with Manchester United coming from 0-3 down at Chelsea to gain a 3-3 draw.

In France FC Nantes has had another road victory and if they can put together a couple more good results could actually move back into contention for promotion. The game scheduled for Monday has been postponed due to the fairly unusual and quite unexpected appearance of winter.Go figure, more winter in Nantes than in Roseville.

I have been receiving reports of winter time riding but have not actually yet made the commitment myself. Today, though, it was in the 40s and my walk took my on a tour of streets which are almost completely dry. Some cooler air is predicted for tomorrow but later in the week we could see more of what we had today. I am going to pump some tires and the possibility of miles in February is suddenly very real.

Gustavus 3, Hamline 2

Shots on goal were 61-13 in favor of Gustavus but Hamline had the game tied 2-2 late in the 3rd period before the Gusties finally, FINALLY got the game winner.

It was a Hamline home game played at the State Fair Coliseum. Temperature at the Cattle Barn immediately after the game was 27F.

Bicycle content.

Two bicycle encounters

I went out for a walk today. I reached the busy street at the end of the block and finding that at that moment there was a surge in traffic I turned left and proceeded to walk on the shoulder of the street down towards where there is a cross walk which would allow me to get across to the new sidewalk on the other side of the street, it's a distance of about the length of one city lot. I was walking on the left hand side of the street, facing traffic, the direction considered by everyone to be the safest place for a pedestrian to be when interacting with moving traffic. I got about half way to the crosswalk and made a pedestrian move familiar to all bicyclists, I turned my body to look back at traffic and while I did so I moved slightly to my right, preparing to cross the street if such a crossing was going to be safe. The bike salmon missed me by about an inch. He proceeded to make his displeasure known both verbally and with the universal hand signal, even though his message was identical in both communication formats.

But why dwell on unpleasantness, suffice to say that throwing words around is easy and I have not forgotten how to speak.

I was walking along about a mile later, pretty much over the first encounter when I met a person also out walking, she with a dog. Note that I was, fairly obviously, within easy walking distance of my house. I did not know the other pedestrian and did not recognize her as one of the handful of walkers that I recognize as individuals that I see out there regularly (the "regulars"). But I prepared, as is my custom while walking (and actually while riding as well) to offer a brief, courteous greeting delivered with what I hope to be a pleasant expression on my face.

She surprised me by speaking first and saying, "It won't be long until you are out on your bike."

Since then I have been dwelling on the pleasantness.
